Spencer gives up 9 points in three quarters, beats Emmetsburg 42-20

The 11 points Emmetsburg scored in the first quarter would be more than they would score the rest of the game as Spencer locked down defensively to improve to 2-1 in the Lakes Conference with a 42-20 win Tuesday night.

After trailing 11-9 after the first quarter, with nine points coming from Ashton Connelly, Spencer outscored Emmetsburg 33-9 the rest of the game, including 18-2 in the fourth quarter. Kirstin Martindale and Taylor Anderson each had 10 points, while Martindale and Heather Williamson each grabbed 10 rebounds.

Spencer's Kirstin Martindale ties up Emmetsburg's Ashton Connelly Tuesday night in Emmetsburg. A jump ball was called on the play, while the Lady Tigers cruised after the first quarter.
"We did everything great tonight except shooting the ball," head coach Don Martindale said. "Taylor Anderson, Kari Kramer and Taylor Glover were outstanding with their perimeter defense. (Ashton Connelly) started off hot but once we dug in, it caused them some problems. Emmetsburg did a nice job of slowing down the game."

Spencer shot 17-of-48 for the game, including 5-of-21 from three and 3-of-4 from the line. Anderson and Alexa Allen each hit two 3-pointers, with Kari Kramer adding the fifth.

The Tiger defense forced Emmetsburg (0-5) into an 8-for-34 shooting game, with five of the field goals coming from Connelly, who finished with 11 points (5-of-19). Spencer totaled 10 steals and eight blocks in the win, including four from Martindale.

"We're really proud of the kids," Martindale added. "We tell them, even when the shot's not falling, you can still bring your defense and rebounding."

Spencer (5-2) will face Le Mars (1-4) on the road Friday.
