Spencer won its second Saturday tournament of the season Dec. 8 in Algona during a round-robin style showcase featuring six teams. Algona took second place, trailing Spencer 210.5 - 198.5. Tanner Schaefer (160 lbs.) and Levi Gilmore (138) remained unbeaten on the season with two first-place finishes, while Bailey Hawn won the 120-pound bracket.

Four other Tigers finished second and two more in third to give coach David Schaefer nine top-3 finishers on the day.

"It was critical for us to get as many in the top-3 as we did," he said. "I was impressed with Algona's athleticism, and they're a well-coached team."

Tanner Schaefer (12-0) scored four first-period pins and a 13-1 major decision over Algona's Tyler Friedrichs to win the 160-pound division. Gilmore went 4-0 with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision at 138 pounds. Hawn needed just two wins, a pin and major decision, to win at 120, which featured just two other wrestlers.

"They all looked very convincing," Schaefer said of the three champs.

Senior John Christopherson (11-1) lost his first match of the season at 126 pounds as Underwood's Andrew Foutch, rated No. 1 in Class 1A, won a 2-1 decision in the day's first match. Christopherson led 1-0 beginning the third period before Foutch scored a takedown.

"It was a good match," Schaefer said. "I thought John looked better, he took a lot more shots than (Foutch) did. I thought he got a takedown in the first period but it was a good match between them. We'd get them next time but we won't see them again. There's a couple things to clean up."

Dylan Huntoon (106), Trevor Streuli (113) and Blaine Johnson (170) also took second for the Tigers. Huntoon faced Underwood's Taylor Curtis, also top-rated in 1A, and was pinned in 3:42 for his only loss on the day.

Nick Gross (132) and Adam W. Johnson (145) each took third in Algona as Spencer's focus will now shift to a big Lakes Conference dual Thursday night against Emmetsburg in Hull (Western Christian).

Emmetsburg enters the season as a ranked team in Class 1A, featuring returning state qualifiers, Andrew Wellik (182) and Austin McCarten (195). Spencer won last year's dual easily with multiple Emmetsburg wrestlers missing the match.

"It's going to be a fun dual. I think a lot of points are going to be scored," Schaefer said. "We have the ability to put up a lot of points, and so do they. Whoever gets more bonus points is going to win. We've got to get pins."

The Lakes Conference double dual starts at 6 p.m. at Western Christian.

  • As a former Spencer High School wrestler and graduate ("76"), I have found it thoroughly enjoyable to follow the successes achieved by the team over recent years. It would appear Coach Schaefer has developed and groomed another strong line-up again for 2012-13. I wish them my best and hope everyone stays healthy for another successful season.
