Wrestlers win first Lakes double dual

The conference schedule opened in typical Spencer wrestling fashion Thursday night when the winners of the last seven Lakes Conference dual titles beat Le Mars (58-24) and Storm Lake (55-21) at Le Mars High School. Spencer totaled nine pins in the win over Le Mars and won nine consecutive matches from 113 pounds to 170, while Spencer recorded four pins, two technical falls and three forfeits against Storm Lake.

"It was nice to kick off the conference season with two convincing wins," head coach David Schaefer said. "We racked up a lot of pins, which is nice to see to get those bonus points. ... We've got some things to work on but that's to be expected at this point in the season."

Tanner Schaefer improved to 7-0, all by pin, with two falls Thursday night at 160 pounds. Le Mars' Chris Haman did make it into the second round for the first time by a Schaefer opponent this year, however briefly, as the pin came 24 seconds into round two.

Other undefeated Tigers this season are Trevor Streuli, John Christopherson and Levi Gilmore, and all three won twice by either pin, technical fall or forfeit. Bailey Hawn pinned both opponents, while Blaine Johnson won by pin and technical fall.

Adam W. Johnson recorded the fastest pin of the night in 13 seconds over Tyler Hoffman of Le Mars at 145 pounds.

Spencer will wrestle at the Algona tournament this Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Next week will feature a big Lakes dual when Spencer travels to Western Christian to wrestle the Wolfpack and Emmetsburg on Thursday, Dec. 13.
