The Spencer girls won their third game in a row and first Lakes Conference matchup with a 52-40 win over Cherokee at home on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Taylor Glover led the Tigers with 11 points, including 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. Eight Lady Tigers scored in the win.
Spencer also got 15 points off the bench from Emily Burns (6 points), Kari Kramer (6 points) and Kelli Kramer (3 points).
"Taylor Glover was outstanding. I can't say enough about the energy she brings," head coach Don Martindale said. "Our bench played very well also. We got nice contributions from Emily Burns, Kari and Kelli Kramer, Abby Schauer and Madi Rost. The really gave us a spark and there wasn't any drop off."
Spencer's defense controlled the game in the first half as they led 25-13 at halftime. Alexa Allen hit two 3-pointers and finished with eight points, and Heather Williamson added eight points and eight rebounds. Taylor Anderson scored five points, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists as the Tigers improve to 3-1 on the season.
Cherokee's Megan Hummel scored a game-high 22 points and hit three 3-pointers.
The Lakes Conference schedule now gets under way and Martindale feels there are a couple of areas the Tigers need to focus on as the season moves forward.
"We really need to concentrate on staying out of foul trouble. Fouls happen as a result of poor defensive positioning. We need to move our feet and play smart. We also need to quit playing in spurts and get more consistent on the offensive end," he said.
The Lady Tigers travel to face third-ranked Estherville Lincoln Central Friday night and host Sioux City North on Saturday night at Spencer Field House.
INJURY UPDATE: Starting point guard Kelsey Rolfes didn't play Tuesday night after injuring her knee early in Friday's win over Unity. Kirstin Martindale suffered an injury in the fourth quarter Tuesday and her status in uncertain for Friday.
SPENCER SCORING: Taylor Glover 11, Heather Williamson 8, Alexa Allen 8, Emily Burns 6, Kari Kramer 6, Kirstin Martindale 5, Taylor Anderson 5, Kelli Kramer 3.
