Wrestling: Spencer wins Okoboji Invite with 5 champs

The Spencer wrestlers joined nine other teams, including Okoboji, GTRA, Sioux Central/Laurens-Marathon and Spirit Lake Park at the Okoboji Invitational on Saturday for the first tournament of the year.

Spencer won the meet handily with 242 points over Spirit Lake Park's 165 with all 14 Tiger wrestlers placing in the top-6. The Tigers put seven wrestlers into the finals, with five winning. Dylan Huntoon (106), Trevor Streuli (113), John Christopherson (126), Levi Gilmore (138) and Tanner Schaefer (160) all were champions.

Bailey Hawn (120) lost to two-time state champion Doug Miner of SLP. Blaine Johnson lost a 2-0 decision in the final to Ben Loosbrock of Fulda, Minn. at 170 pounds.

Huntoon pinned his way through the 106 bracket and won with a pin over Treyton Virtue of Central Lyon/GLR in 56 seconds. Streuli got two pins and won the final, 9-0, over Clayton Hertle of Fulda. Christopherson got two first-period pins before beating Colby McIntire of Central Lyon, 10-2.

Gilmore earned a pin, then defeated Sioux Central/L-M's Cole Moens in the semifinals, 3-0, before beating GTRA's Ty Gibson, who finished fifth at state last year, 8-3, in the final.

Schaefer pinned all three of his opponents in the first period, including GTRA's Matt McGrauth in the final in 1:41. Schaefer has yet to wrestle out of the first period in his first five matches this season (5-0).

Pierce Jensen (182) and Ben Pingel (220) took fourth, and Nick Gross (132), Hunter Cauthron (152) and Austin Roberts (195) each finished fifth for the Tigers.

GTRA's Austin Thompson finished second to HMS's Heath Nagel at 132 pounds. Nagel won the final, 6-0. At 145 pounds, SLP's Zach Skopec beat Okoboji's Taylor Cody by technical fall in the final, 19-4. SLP got its third champion from David Trucksess at 152 pounds.

Alex Hoffman of GTRA took third at 120 and Kaleb Vanderpool of Okoboji took third at 126. Okoboji's Jordan Hanna was also third at 152.
