The Tiger boys didn't start as quickly as they did Tuesday night in the opener, but they got things going in the second quarter as they clamped down on Newell-Fonda Thursday night and won 55-37. The Tigers are now 2-0 on the season.

Newell-Fonda started quickly and led 21-13 after the first quarter. Spencer went to a zone defense in the second period and gave the Mustangs problems as they out-scored Newell-Fonda 22-1 in the second period to take a 35-22 lead.

This was the second time in as many games the Tigers defense has allowed just one free throw in a quarter to their opponents. Spencer out-scored Sioux Central 17-1 in the first quarter Tuesday night.

Blake Altenhofen and Matthew Klemme led Spencer in scoring with 16 each, while Matt Finnern had 14. Tanner Morris finished with eight.

Brady Bohe led Newell-Fonda with eight points, and Dillon and Dalton Anderson each had five.

Newell-Fonda edged Spencer in the third quarter, 13-10, to make it a 10-point game, but the Spencer defense buckled down again in the fourth as they finished the final eight minutes on a 10-2 run.

Spencer is back in action tonight (Friday) at Unity Christian in Orange City as part of a girl/boy varsity doubleheader, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

SPENCER: Blake Altenhofen 17, Matthew Klemme 16, Matt Finnern 14, Tanner Morris 8.
