Eventually the truth comes out. A lot of money is spent on gourmet, organic and natural foodie foods each year for absolutely no benefit. Consumers, often young mothers, are vulnerable to the deception that organic natural foods are somehow healthier and because they love their children dearly they will pay more for foods portrayed as being superior nutritionally.

Food safety is also part of the sales package. These consumers are told that organic food is better for the environment as fewer pesticides and fertilizer is used. All of this is deception. Whole Foods continues to add new stores to spread the myths.

Time magazine compared a list of supermarket foods including peanut butter, honey, mustard, tuna, dark chocolate, olive oil, eggs and milk and the best they could do comparing the supermarket products to the foodie foods was two ties when the benefits of taste, nutrition and cost were compared. The foodie foods typically cost twice as much or more than the supermarket products and there is no value to consumers from the higher cost. It is all marketing and consumers are gullible to the sales pitch.

Time Magazine told the truth. Mehmet Oz, host of the Dr. Oz show says, "The rise of foodie culture over the past decade has venerated all things small-batch, local-farm and organic-all with premium price tags. But let's be clear: You don't need to eat like the 1 percent to eat healthily. After several years of research and experience, I have come to an encouraging conclusion: The American food supply is abundant, nutritionally sound, and affordable and, with a few simple considerations, comparable to the most elite organic diets. Save the cash: the 99 percent diet can be good for you. This advice will be serious buzz kill for specialty brands and high-end food companies marketing the exclusive hyper-healthy nature of their more expensive products. But I consider it a public-health service to the consumer who has to feed a family of five or the person who wants to make all the right choices and instead is alienated and dejected because the marketing of healthy foods too often blurs into elitism, with all the expense and culinary affectation that implies."

The health foods organic hype is built on the false pretext that typical supermarket fare is unhealthy, yet the studies done can't prove it. There has been an entire food movement built on the hype that there is some inherent threat in GMOs, while Dr. Norman Borlaug pointed out that genes are genes. The late Nobel scientist said how they were put together didn't change the outcome. The FDA has found in studies that there is no difference between GMO and non-GMO corn yet organic producers reject the science genetics like they believe the world is flat. California organic producers were giddy over the prospect of a GMO food labeling proposition being enacted, looking to expand their organic commercial production on the prospect of a surge in demand from labeling.

To their chagrin when the public was well informed on the issue the GMO food labels were defeated. They had intended to profit from spreading lies about GMO food. A Stanford University study found that "Organic produce and meat typically isn't any better for you than conventional varieties when it comes to vitamin and nutrient content, according to a new review of the evidence."

"The study also showed a rate of 65 percent E. coli contamination in pork from organically raised pigs versus 49 percent for conventionally raised hogs. There was a slight increase in the level of pesticides found in the urine of children consuming conventional versus organic foods, but the level was well below that determined to be safe, and there was no difference in levels in urine, blood, semen or breast milk in adults. In poultry, there was a slightly higher rate of campylobacter contamination in organic versus conventional product -- 67 percent compared to 64 percent -- and similar differences but lower contamination rates with salmonella."

If fruits and vegetables are washed, any difference in pesticide residue goes down the drain. I don't want to lump local foods in with the foodie deceptions. Local foods make some sense. Farmer's Markets make sense. The savings on transportation cost of moving food from the farm or garden to consumers and the value that I would put on garden freshness makes local foods attractive. Local food is not going to feed the world however, as when shipped it is no longer local or fresh.

Show me the value. Show me something real that paying more for organic, natural, free range, grass fed justifies the cost. Otherwise this type of food production undermines the entire purpose and mission of agricultural development.

Our purpose is to produce bountiful low cost food within sustainable production systems that take the least amount of disposable income from consumers to leave more wealth for the development of the human race. The foodie movement, in my opinion, does the exact opposite, taking advantage of consumer fears and vulnerabilities, adding unnecessary cost needed to sustain itself.

That mother should not worry that supermarket food is not healthful enough for her toddler. Too often the media has played into the myths and deceptions but this time, Time Magazine called foodie food what it is, a food snob diet that takes advantage of some consumers who can least afford it.

Regarding "Eventually the Truth Comes Out". Wow, the truth has been out and Dr Oz knows it but he suddenly went back from his advice to mothers that their children are worth eating clean and organic. I am very proud to be an American but let me say "Wake Up America" Do you think it is a coincidence America leads the world with the highest cancer rates? European countries are among about 60 other countries who require GMO labeling of foods. I guess they think their people have a right to decide to purchase inferior foods. Unlike the U.S.

Wow, snooty, elitist? Lets see here. I own a Ford Fiesta and a 1999 F-150. Snooty, elitist? Hardly not! I chose the Fiesta to save lots in gas $. So now I can choose premium fuel for my body. Don't you think you are worth premium fuel?

At 48, my health was going down the toilet. I figured this wasn't normal. After all I was eating what the so called government experts were telling was healthy! First came Nexium for reflux, then blood pressure meds. Doc told me I would need these meds forever! Well, after deciding to "educate" myself and detoxify all chemicals, additives etc. and eat clean unadulterated foods I am completely drug free and with better blood lipids etc. than ever in my life. Coincidence? I think not. Haven't had a cold or illness in years. Why is it that millions of 40 year old and younger men in the U.S. are needing sexual performance meds? I was there too. At 55, now I enjoy the pleasure and performance as I did when I was 20! Long before GMO etc. tainted foods. Come on people; Wake up!

Since my days of declining health, I have become an Holistic Nutritionist - Practioner and I am happy to educate many others with the opportunity to attain optimum health. I truly wish everybody could experience it. So read the "real" studies out there and refuse to eat GMO crap

When I was a kid all food was organic, non-Gmo, animal friendly, and biodegradable? What is wrong with choosing it for my family now? I find it quite a challenge as a single woman raising my grandchildren to eat healthily so to do it I grow my own garden, I can and preserve the food I grow and buy from local farmers and bake our bread. I care that the milk we drink and eggs and meat we eat aren't from tortured animals.

I am low income and work hard to maintain an organic and green lifestyle. And it is a lifestyle. I am usually called a person who loves and cares about her family, never has anyone accused me of being an elite snob!

Most organic food is not made from large corporations but Mom and Pop companies who care about making a difference just like I do.

I am inclined to agree with Dave on this. Most home gardens would not even be considered organic because they haven't been "certified" aka the owners haven't paid someone to call them organic. But all one needs to do is look at or taste my tomatoes to know they are better tasting and better for you than anything in the store labeled organic. Compare organic apple to regular apples at your store. In my experience, organic food is of lower quality to begin with and then often sits on the shelf longer because of lower demand.

Plants get genetically modified in nature. Pollen does not know it is "dangerous" to jump between breeds. Pesticides - chemicals - are worth worrying about. Whether your Washington Braeburn had sex with an Oregon Braeburn is not a big deal. Use common sense. Our parents created genetically modified organisms too but we seem to be doing fine.

For those worried about eating healthy, the debate should be between processed v unprocessed, not organic v non organic. Too many people at the grocery store are on the frozen dinner and soda diet. I heard excellent, simple advise on the subject recently. "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Pretty much covers everything you need to know. One last thing- it's not that expensive to eath healthy. $5/week and you've got a salad every night. $5/week and you've got 2 pieces of fruit per day. $10/week for meat. $30 for the rest of your food. I realize many have to cook for a family which raises the cost a bit. But the moral of the story is that it can be done if you are a smart shopper!

I agree that processed vs natural food is the biggest food problem. Also, many food companies still put the bottom line before wholesome food. Still there many good food choices at the supermarket, sad really that there are so many bad choices too.

We could grow food like we did 50 years ago. But someone needs to tell 30% of the people that they have grab a hoe and help weed and pick off bugs. What....no takers.....that's what I thought. :)

everything in moderation, smaller portions, less snacking, exercise, raw fruits and veggies, different proteins (red fish, white chicken, black beans), easy on the breads and sugars...this all sounds pretty easy
