ATV accident near West Bend claims life

Glenn Gearhart perished and another person was life-flighted by Mercy Air with serious injuries following the report of an ATV accident on a private property in West Bend Wednesday.

Palo Alto County Sheriff's deputies received a 911 call at 10:37 p.m. Wednesday to the south of the Glenn and Mary Gearhart residence, at 100 Seventh St. SW.

The ATV, owned by the Gearharts, was northbound, through the property, when it struck a tree. Both the driver and a 28-year-old passenger were seriously injured, and following the administration of life-saving measures by emergency responders, transported to Palo Alto County Hospital. Gearhart did not survive the accident, and the unidentified passenger was life-flighted. The passenger was not identified.

Palo Alto County Ambulance, West Bend Ambulance and First Responders, Emmetsburg Police Department and the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office all assisted with the incident.
