For tonight, let's be thankful

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Have you ever noticed how there aren't any Thanksgiving songs? It seems that we go right from singing "Ghostbusters," "Werewolves in London," and "Halloween" to chanting "fa-la-la-la" and jingling bells.

Correction: there is one Thanksgiving song, though it's hidden under the album title "Noel."

We can complain day in and day out about things that happen completely out of our control. And, I'm sure, give it enough time and we'll be back at it.

But this time of year is supposed to be different. And with that, I'll leave you simply to enjoy your football, family, friends, coma-inducing amounts of food, and a portion of this song.

"Thankful," as sung by Josh Groban:

Some days we forget to look around us / Some days we can't see the joy that surrounds us / So caught up inside ourselves / We take when we should give / So for tonight we pray for / What we know can be / And on this day we hope for / What we still can't see / It's up to us to be the change / And even though we all can still do more / There's so much to be thankful for / Look beyond ourselves, there's so much sorrow / It's way too late to say, "I'll cry tomorrow" / Each of us must find our truth / We're so long overdue / So for tonight we pray for / What we know can be / And every day we hope for / What we still can't see / It's up to us to be the change / And even though we all can still do more / There's so much to be thankful for / Even with our differences / There is a place we're all connected / Each of us can find each other's love / So for tonight we pray for / What we know can be / And on this day we hope for / What we still can't see / It's up to us to be the change / And even though this world needs so much more / There's so much to be thankful for.
