'Take me fishing'

More than 75 anglers and spectators flocked to Scharnberg Park for a trout release Saturday afternoon. A total of 1,500 trout were released, including 100 tagged trout. Individuals who caught a tagged trout received a fishing-related reward. Department of Natural Resources Fisheries biologist Mike Hawkins said more children took part in the event than have done so in the past. "That's what this is all about," Hawkins said. Hawkins believes the local portion of Iowa's Urban Trout Program draws people from throughout the Iowa Lakes Corridor Region. "This is an easy way to get into fishing, so it gets kids involved," Hawkins said. "We're also looking at adult anglers. Someone who hasn't tried fishing or who hasn't done it for a while may come to something like this. We also want to introduce people to the trout program." That program has been successful, according to Hawkins, who cited the natural reproduction of trout in northeastern Iowa streams.
