State football: Finals set

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

The 2012 high school football season will come to a close this week as all six classes will crown champions at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Beginning with the 8-man title clash on Thursday morning between Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Don Bosco, a pair of unbeatens.

MMC is playing in its first season of 8-man and is looking to run the table coming out of District 1 in northwest Iowa. MMC and Don Bosco will face each other on Thursday at 10 a.m.

In Class A, the next game on the slate at 1:36 p.m. Thursday, undefeated Wapsie Valley will face Hinton, who entered the playoffs at 6-3. Hinton, also out of northwest's District 1, has moved through the Class A bracket beating Akron-Westfield and Logan-Magnolia.

The final game on Thursday will feature Class 3A and Spencer's district foe, Bishop Heelan. The Crusaders face undefeated Decorah in a 2008 rematch, won by Heelan. Both teams routed their semifinal opponents and are set for the final at 7 p.m. Spencer remains the only team to beat Heelan, in the regular season finale on Oct. 19.

FRIDAY GAMES - SPIRIT LAKE

Friday, Nov. 16 will start with Class 1A at 11 a.m. and Council Bluffs, St. Albert squaring off against Iowa City Regina. St. Albert beat Emmetsburg, 18-7, to advance to play last year's 2A champs, Regina. St. Albert (12-1) has only lost to 3A Lewis Central while Regina is unbeaten.

Spirit Lake will look to close the deal this season and hoist the championship trophy after falling in the title game to Regina last year. The Indians beat No. 1 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, and then Carroll Kuemper to advance to the finals against undefeated Mediapolis and Kansas State-recruit Jesse Ertz. Ertz, a senior quarterback, has thrown 45 touchdowns against two interceptions this season.

In the final game of the season, Class 4A will pit Ankeny (13-0) against Cedar Rapids Xavier (13-0). This season will mark the last before the Ankeny school district splits into two separate districts. Iowa State-recruit Joel Lanning leads Ankeny to the final at 7:06 p.m. Friday night.

Go Ankeny! If you haven't seen them play this year, you ought to tune in on Saturday evening. They've got great teamwork, and they are fun to watch. No question, it's going to be a good game.
