A Veteran's Day Program will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Veteran's Memorial just north of the Spencer Municipal Utilities offices on Grand Avenue. Sgt. Daniel Shaughnessy with the Iowa National Guard will be the featured speaker. Shaugnessy grew up in Greenville, graduating from Clay Central-Everly in May 2004. In 2005, Shaughnessy enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 1-14th Cavalry, Ft. Lewis, Wash. He was deployed to Iraq from June 2006 to September 2007 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In December 2008 he enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard, Delta Co. 1-168th Infantry, deploying September 2010 to June 2011 to Afghanistan. Upon his return, he was assigned to "C" Battery, 1-194th Field Artillery Estherville as full-time recruiting NCO.
No flags this year
Normally, Avenue of Flags coordinators are looking for volunteers to help put flags up for Veteran's Day. With the projected wet weather and cold, the group is concerned that flags may freeze in the pipes in the ground and won't be able to be removed. The risk to the flags is too great. The decision was made by Rick Dean, president of the Avenue of Fags and the board of directors.
Veteran's Day closings
In observance of Veteran's Day, Monday will serve as a federal day of observance, thus all federal, state, county and city government offices will be closed. Most if not all banks will also be closed that day. There will be no mail delivery on Monday. Also, the Chamber Office will be closed on Monday in observance of Veteran's Day.
