Renaissance dollars awarded to area organizations

Friday, November 9, 2012

At the recommendation of the Spencer Renaissance Initiative Committee, the Spencer City Council approved the distribution of more than $18,000 in funds to eight area Spencer non-profit agencies.

The largest designation, $7,500, went to the Spencer Park Supporters to be used for the Little Sioux River and Riverfront projects. The project request was fully funded.

A second fully funded request came from the Spencer Library Trust, in the amount of $2,000, to assist in the start-up of an e-book program for all patrons.

The funds used are collected as a portion of the proceeds from the annual Local Option Sales Tax collection. Since 1999, more than $425,000 has been awarded to 49 different organizations.

Additional designations included: $2,000 to Parker Historical Society for a new dry press mount machine; $1,675 to the Northwest Iowa Youth Soccer Alliance for new goal posts; $1,550 for the Spencer Area Activity Center to assist with the purchase of automatic door closers for the library; $1,500 to Positively Spencer Youth for a drug terminator incinerator; $1,000 for musical instruments and equipment at Spencer Community Theatre; and $1,000 toward the renovation of batting cage facilities through the Spencer Youth Baseball & Softball Association.

A new round of funding will be distributed in the spring.
