Employee service recognition awards, discussion of the fair's nearly $100,000 investment in capital improvements, board elections, and announcement of the 2013 Clay County Fair theme highlighted the annual meeting of the Clay County Fair Association Monday in Spencer.

During his report to the membership, secretary/manager Jeremy Parsons thanked those who had made the 2012 Fair such a success. He also unveiled the theme for the 2013 Fair, "Bushels of Fun."

"Our theme for 2013 is "Bushels of Fun," which essentially sums up the fair's focus on agriculture and affordable family entertainment," Parsons said. "We asked fairgoers to 'Discover the Greatest' in 2012, and now we want them to have 'Bushels of Fun' in 2013."

Based on preliminary financial information provided by board treasurer George Moriarty, the fair has concluded a positive year financially, including an investment of nearly $100,000 in capital improvements to the fairgrounds. Some projects completed in 2012 included installation of a new permanent sound system in the grandstand, purchase of the Giant Slide, new roofs on the Stables and the historic Main Gate, major electrical upgrades on "food row" and the Grandstand, bleacher improvements to the Outdoor Arena, and addition of dirt to the racetrack.

"My first year as manager has been an unbelievable year due to the support and enthusiasm of my family, the executive committee, the board of directors, my full-time staff and the hundreds of fair-time employees and volunteers. It has been such a warm welcome into the Clay County Fair family," Parsons said.

He continued, "I was very pleased with the fair we put together in 2012 - people seemed to respond well to the theme, the programming and the changes we made. I expect that to continue in 2013 - 'Bushels of Fun' is going to be a great theme to develop and plan a great fair around."

Forty-five employees, representing a combined 495 years of service to the Clay County Fair, received employee years of service awards. Four individuals received recognition for 30 years of service: Bill Bangs, Barb Gough, Mitch McKeever and Louise Vogt. Two individuals, Wayne Ginger and Glen Chenhall, were honored for 50 years of service.

Nine members - Doug Biedenfeld, Dave Brugman, Dave Potratz, Leon Rodas, Carl Simons, Gayle Simons, Paul Stave, Gary Tolzmann and Mike White - were elected to the 27-member fair board of directors. Each was elected to a three-year term.

In the board organizational session, conducted following the annual meeting, Dave Simington was re-elected president.
