Long-time Terril resident, Mary Rubis, passed away Sept. 28, 2012, in Mesa, Ariz. She was 83 years old.
Mary M. Guess was born Aug. 4, 1929, in rural Plover, Iowa, the daughter of Earl C. Guess and Mary Q. (Smith) Guess. After graduating from Plover High School in 1947, she attended Iowa State Teachers' College in Cedar Falls to become a primary education teacher. She taught first grade at Terril Community School for one year and substituted during the following years. She then worked as a bookkeeper at the Terril Farmer's Cooperative Elevator for over 30 years.
On Jan. 14, 1949, Mary and Weldon "Tom" Rubis were married at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville. To this union were born Teresa, Mark, Monte, and Gail, who were all raised in Terril and graduated from Terril Community School.
Left to cherish her memory are: Teresa (Steve) Holley, of Grand Junction, Colo.; Mark (Mary) Rubis, of Minnetonka, Minn.; and Gail (Jeff) Herndon, of Gilbert, Ariz.; and grandchildren Alysia Rubis Heller, of Shawnee, Kansas; David Rubis, of Milford; and Elsa Herndon, of Glibert, Ariz; and four great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; one son, Monte; her parents; two sisters: Ruth and Patricia; and three brothers: David, Thomas and Lester.
Final interment will be at Fairview Cemetery near Terril.
