James Richard Fenton passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Urbandale Health Care Center in Urbandale, from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

He was born November 6, 1947 in Keokuk, son of Paul and Madge (Carroll) Fenton. James was affectionately known to both family and friends as Jim, or Jimmy, for the majority of his life. He married Roline Sapp on Feb. 5, 1977, and welcomed three step-children into his life. He and Roline later added two daughters, Jaimi in 1978, and Staci in 1981. Jim was preceded in death by both his parents, a sister, Nancy Monroe, and beloved daughter Jaimi Lynn Fenton.

After marrying Roline, the family relocated to Spencer, where Jim began working at Eaton Corporation, and worked for 31 years. His hobbies and fondest memories include hunting for Morel mushrooms, spending time at the pool hall with his friends, and fishing with his grandchildren. Jim was known to always have a joke or a story ready to tell, a hand ready to shake, and a laugh ready to share. He counted his friends as family, and enjoyed spending his time with them whenever he was able. Other hobbies Jim enjoyed included cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, watching old movies, spending time in the sunshine and enjoying the changing leaves in the fall. He loved returning home to watch the waters of the Mississippi river, and was easily recognized later on by a fondness for brightly colored suspenders, and a love for long sleeve shirts.

Jim is survived by his wife, daughter Staci (Scott) Mead of Des Moines; step-daughters Julie (Ty) Rowse of Chugiak, Alaska, and Linda (Kevin) Slatyon of Des Moines; step-son Kevin (Mary) Curfman of Parker, Colo.; brother Allen (Debbie) Fenton of Hamilton, Ill.; and sisters Joyce (Larry) Schevers, of Argyle, and Patty Mahoney of Hamilton, Ill. Also surviving are Jim's grandchildren, Chance and Catelyn Mead, step-grandchildren Jacob, John, James and Jody Ashton, Rachel, Samantha, Christine, Shelby and Caleb Curfman, Erin (Jay) Rogers, Samantha and Trish Rowse, and step-great-grandchildren Jonathan and Kaitlynn Smart, Caius Ashton, and numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Memorials have been established in memory of James Fenton.
