The Lady Tigers battled in each set Thursday night against Le Mars but couldn't steal one from the Bulldogs as Spencer's season came to a close with a 3-0 loss in the 4A Regional semifinal in Le Mars.

Le Mars (25-12) advances to the regional final against Charles City (41-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 30 in Humboldt. The winner of that match will qualify for the state tournament. Charles City has only lost to last year's 2A champion, Dike-New Hartford, this season.

The Spencer season ends with a 19-19 overall record, 5-2 in the Lakes Conference, and a first-round regional win over Humboldt. Six seniors finished their volleyball careers for Spencer: Maddie Boyd, Taylor Glover, Kari Miller, Taylor Anderson, Sydney VanWettering and Nikki Sandvig.

In the first set Thursday, the Lady Tigers got out to a 10-5 lead before Le Mars was able to tie the game at 17-17. The Bulldogs would win the next six points and claim the win, 25-20.

Set two again went back and forth early on before the game was tied at 15-15. The Bulldogs went on a 5-point run to take the lead and was able to hold off the Tigers for another 25-20 win.

The third and final set saw a Tiger team not ready to go quietly as they fell behind 19-9 and faced match point at 24-15. But Spencer would go on to win the next seven points behind four Kirstin Martindale kills and two aces from Boyd. They couldn't complete the comeback and the match ended, 25-22.

Martindale led with 14 kills on 34 attempts with five attack errors, and also tallied a team-high 11 digs. Anderson added 10 kills on 28 attempts, four total blocks and two aces.

Spencer collected nine aces in the match, with Boyd leading with three. The senior setter also had 15 assists.
