The Clay Central-Everly volleyball team lost a back-and-forth five-set match at George-Little Rock Tuesday night, 3-2, in the 1A Regional Quarterfinal. The Mavs won the first and fourth sets of a match that featured numerous ties and runs for each team.
CC-E got on the board first, coming back from an 18-20 deficit to claim set one, 25-23. In set two, G-LR jumped out early only to have CC-E tie the set at 15-15. The Mustangs won the next four points to gain some breathing room and went on to win 25-21 to even the match.
G-LR looked poised to end the match after four sets by taking a 17-10 lead with senior Shannon Klaassen serving five consecutive points. Klaassen led the Mustangs with 21 kills in the match on 39 attempts. She also had five aces.
The Mavericks scraped their way back into the match, tying the set at 20-20. After out-scoring G-LR 15-5 over the set's final 20 points, CC-E won set four, 25-22.
In the fifth and deciding set, G-LR expanded the lead early and would go on to win, 15-7, to advance in the 1A playoffs.
The loss drops CC-E to 18-10 on the year. G-LR improves to 13-17 and will face Central Lyon on Friday, Oct. 26 in George.
CC-E will lose six seniors from the 2012 team. Emily Jobst, Stevie Scott, Heather Busch, Tori Rayner, Talor Stein and Becca Borkowski all finished their volleyball careers Tuesday night.
