The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

The Spencer cross country teams know both well after Monday's 3A State Qualifying Meet.

The boys cross country team enjoyed the "victory," so to speak, after earning a trip to the state meet after finishing second Monday afternoon with Ryan Bauermeister taking second place and Matt Behrens fifth as the boys team was runners-up to Bishop Heelan.

That didn't change.

The Spencer girls team, on the other hand, left Spencer Municipal Golf Course on the outside looking in. Their season had ended in fourth place, all except for junior Cierra Guerrero, who earned her third-consecutive individual trip to the state meet with a ninth-place finish.

The initial posted scores to the Girls Athletic Union showed MOC-Floyd Valley winning with 46 points, Heelan with 60 and Algona getting the third and final spot with 122. Spencer had 124.

Hours after the meet, timers who ran the meet from Black Squirrel Timing were contacted about two Le Mars runners that weren't credited with finishing the race. Black Squirrel reviewed the video tape, used for backup in cases such as this, and found errors in the results. New places were issued with Spencer and Algona now in a tie for third at 126 points, with Spencer winning on the tiebreaker (6th runner). Algona's girls, who were cheering in celebration after the announcement at the meet, would now face the other side of sport's emotional scale. The state doesn't allow for exceptions - only the top three teams advance.

"I'm happy and excited for our girls, but this isn't the way I envisioned it," Spencer coach Kurt Bauermeister said. "I feel awful for Algona. You always want to try and do what's right for the kids."

The Girls Athletic Union revised the results just after 11 p.m. The Le Mars runners that weren't counted were 35 and 37, bumping everyone after them up a place or two. Spencer's Daly Tighe was the only Tiger affected, changing her finish from 39 to 41. Two Algona runners finished after the change, increasing its score by four.

For the tiebreaker, Claire Eagan's 52nd-place finish in 17:46 bested Algona's Megann Schmidt's 60th place in No. 6-runner's score.

BOYS FINISH SECOND

Spencer's boys team will move on after a strong performance that featured two top-5 finishers and all five scoring runners in the top-40 of the 12-team district meet. Bauermeister led for the middle portion of the race before Alec DeVries took the lead down the half-mile.

"The boys came out focused and determined tonight," Spencer boys coach Jared Davis said. "It was a great night for them and they really performed well. On paper, we were expected to finish anywhere from third to eighth. To grab second was a very good team effort."

In addition to Bauermeister and Behrens, Levi Gilmore moved up to finish 22nd, Andrew Eisenbacher took 32nd and Jacob Krei finished 39th. Spencer's team score of 102 was ahead of Garner-Hayfield (109) and fourth-place MOC-Floyd Valley (119). Heelan won with 50 points as Alec DeVries won the race in 16:36.

For the Lady Tigers, Kendra Bauermeister took 15th overall. Kari Kramer was 29th with Sara Bauermeister 32nd.

MOC's Bethany Dykstra (14:35) beat Le Mars' Kenzie Theisen (14:46) for the win. MOC-FV finished with three runners in the top-10.

"It was great to see the student body come out in mass and all the parents and fans supporting the teams," Bauermeister added.

The state meet is Saturday, Oct. 27 in Fort Dodge.
