The Lady Tigers advanced with a first-round win in the Class 4A Regional volleyball tournament over Humboldt, 3-1, Monday night in Humboldt. Spencer won the first set, 25-23, lost the second, 18-25, then bounced back to claim the final two sets, 25-19.
The win puts Spencer (19-18) in the regional quarterfinal against Le Mars on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m in Le Mars. The loss ends Humboldt's (21-9) season.
"It was a total team effort," head coach Michele Dirkx said. "I was happy how we followed the game plan. We served tough, hit and blocked well. And we adjusted to their tips and shots very nicely."
The victory also avenges a 2-1 regular-season loss to Humboldt on Sept. 8.
Spencer got 19 kills from Kirstin Martindale, who hit at a .412 percentage. Taylor Anderson added eight kills with four solo blocks and two block assists. Maddie Boyd led with 20 assists.
"Kirstin got on fire and really took over the last two sets," Dirkx said.
Spencer also tallied 11 aces and served 97 percent in the match.
Le Mars (24-12) will host the regional quarterfinal and defeated Spencer, 3-0, on Sept. 11.
