Funeral services for Mrs. LaVon Black, 90, of Spencer, formerly of Rossie, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Rev. Wendy Van Tassell will officiate the service.

Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Mrs. Black passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Spencer Hospital.

LaVon Nettie Black, the daughter of George and Agnes (Fahleen) Brownell, was born Sept. 17, 1922, on a farm near Greenville, Iowa. She attended school in Greenville, graduating from Rossie High School in 1940.

LaVon married Talmadge "Tam" Black on Aug. 28, 1940, in Luverne, Minn. To this union, eight children were born: Jack, Tamra, Kathleen, Patricia, Mary, Jon, Michelle and Jay. LaVon very much loved her children and their families. She worked for Super Valu in Spencer, Myrtle's Store in Rossie and lastly, ran the Rossie Store for her son, Jon. Following retirement, LaVon moved to the Sunset Apartments in Spencer, and most recently lived at Northshire Residence in Spencer. She was a past member of the Rossie United Church of Christ, where she was active with the women's fellowship and taught Sunday school. She was most recently a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer. LaVon had a great love for her 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She will lovingly be remembered for her wonderful holiday meals and special chocolate cream and lemon meringue pies.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tam, on Dec. 26, 1996; one daughter, Patricia Lamberson, in 2012; and one brother, Nathan, in infancy.

Left to cherish her memory are three sons and their wives: Jack and Clara Black of Primghar, Jon and Lori Black of Spencer, and Jay and Lori Black of Huxley; four daughters and their husbands: Tamra and Dennis Gullickson of Moorhead, Minn., Kathleen and Lawrence Bame of Hadley, Mass., Mary and Steve Niesen of Parkville, Mo., and Michelle and Michael Davis of Sheldon; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marian Schwartz, of Green Valley, Ariz.; two brothers: Rolland Brownell and wife, Jo, of Des Moines, and Don and wife, Marcia, Brownell of Clive; other relatives and many friends.

Warner Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
