Volleyball: Tigers win 2 in Algona

The Spencer volleyball team played its final Saturday tournament of the season, going 2-4 in Algona Oct. 13. The Lady Tigers beat West Hancock and Forest City, 2-0, and lost to Carroll, Clear Lake, Algona and Sheldon.

Spencer is 17-18 on the season with a chance to even its record tonight (Tuesday) in Storm Lake with its final regular season match against the Tornadoes. The Tigers are currently 4-2 in Lakes Conference matches.

In the 21-17, 21-13 win over West Hancock, Kirstin Martindale led with seven kills and three aces as the Tigers served 90 percent and tallied 17 kills as a team. Maddie Boyd assisted on 13 of them.

Spencer beat Forest City 21-19, 21-15 with 95 percent service and sevens aces. Taylor Anderson had six kills, while Martindale had four kills, four blocks, seven digs and two aces. Spencer beat Forest City on Sept. 15 also.

Carroll defeated Spencer for the third time this season, 21-18, 12-21, 15-8, with Anderson leading the Tigers with 10 kills on 20 attempts and no attack errors. Kari Miller had eight assists. Carroll went 5-1 at the tournament.

Algona also beat Spencer for the third time this year, 21-18, 21-12. The Tigers notched 16 kills but had 13 attack errors. Martindale had six kills and nine digs, and Anderson added five kills.

Sheldon went 6-0 at the tournament and didn't drop a set. The Orabs defeated Spencer 21-9, 21-14. Taylor Glover had five kills and the only two Spencer aces of the match.

The Tigers' first-round match-up in the regional tournament will be Monday, Oct. 22 on the road to face Humboldt at 7 p.m. The winner will face Le Mars on Thursday, Oct. 25 in Le Mars.
