At 2:49 p.m. Oct. 5, the Clay County Sheriff's Office responded to a four-vehicle accident in the 2800 mile of U.S. Highway 71. Four northbound vehicles were involved in rear-end collisions. Brent Harris was driving a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix and failed to see a 2003 Ford Taurus, driven by Jeanette Raveling, slowing. The Grand Prix struck the Taurus in the rear bumper. The impact pushed Raveling's Taurus into a 2002 Buick LeSabre driven by Nancy Welly, who was waiting to make a left turn. Jessie Brustares, driving a 1993 Ford Tempo, failed to see the accident and struck Harris's vehicle in the rear bumper area. Two suffered minor injuries in the accident. Citations were issued for failure to stop in a safe and assured distance.

At 5:37 p.m. Oct. 5, a 2000 Dodge Dakota, operated by Richard Biegler, 77, of Spencer, was driving south on First Avenue East. A 1999 Buick Park Avenue, driven by Brandon Kruse, 28, of Spencer, was traveling west on East Third Street. Biegler failed to yield the right of way, as instructed by the yield sign, and entered the intersection of the two roads. The right front of the Buick struck the left front of the Dakota. There were no skid marks or signs of evasive actions by either driver. Both vehicles suffered severe disabling damage. Both drivers complained of pain. Both refused treatment at the scene from Spencer Hospital responders. Biegler was cited for failure to obey a yield sign.

At 8:57 a.m. Oct. 6, Josh Koster, 29, Sibley, driving a 2006 Jeep Cherokee, reportedly told the Spencer Police he was ready to leave a parking lot and pull onto North Grand Avenue and felt he was too close to the Grand Avenue and in traffic, so he backed up. While backing, he collided with the front of a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville, driven by Dianna Haburn, 55, of Spencer.

At 12:31 a.m. Oct. 7, Steven Heddinger, 20, of Ayrshire, struck a young deer, which had come out of the ditch onto the roadway, at 280th Avenue and 430th Street near Gillett Grove. Heddinger's 2002 Ford F150 sustained approximately $1,500 in damage.
