Tuesday, October 2, 2012

The Healthiest State Walk Wednesday will continue what the Start Somewhere Walk began last year - getting large groups of Iowans outdoors for some light exercise.

Multiple sites in Spencer will offer area residents the opportunity to participate in the Healthiest State Walk on Wednesday. The .62-mile course will take the average walker 15 minutes to complete and the public is encouraged to pick a site and participate.

The event is part of the ongoing Healthiest State Initiative established by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, designed to help Iowa become the healthiest state in the nation.

Walk sites include:

Spencer Hospital - Grand Avenue Park, 1200 First Ave. E.

Spencer Hy-Vee Walk - 819 Grand Ave.

Spencer Family YMCA Walk - 1001 11th Ave. W.

Tiger Pride Walk - Spencer Middle School

Eaton Scavenger Hunt Walk - 803 32nd Ave. W.

The hospital, Hy-Vee and YMCA walks will begin at noon; the Eaton event will start at 11:30 a.m.; and middle school walk will be conducted at 3 p.m.

To register for a walk, go online to www.iowahealthieststate.com/healthiest-s..., or simply show up at a site to participate.

Last October, more than 291,000 Iowans participated in the Start Somewhere Walk, which was the first activity in conjunction with the Healthiest State Initiative.
