Banners recognize SHS 'all-state' speech qualifiers

Saturday, September 29, 2012

Larry Untiet, director of speech and drama at Spencer High School, noted the school district has received three new banners honoring the accomplishments of the large group speech students who have qualified for the Large Group "Super State" All-State of the Iowa High School Speech Association

Spencer High School has the distinction of being the only high school in the state of Iowa to have qualified and performed at the "Super State" All-State Festival all 37 years of its existence. In the past 37 years, Spencer High School has qualified 192 different groups for the festival, including 27 choral readings, 46 ensemble acting scenes, 42 group mimes, 16 one-act plays, 25 reader's theatres, 16 solo mimes, 12 group improvisation scenes, and 8 musical theatre scenes.

The banners, which were funded with a generous donation from Spencer Municipal Utilities, will be on display in the lobby of the old Spencer Middle School Auditorium.

Large Group Speech is under the direction of Larry Untiet, who has been the director for all 37 years. Katie Kardell, musical theatre director, and Jennifer Hansel, choreographer, assist Untiet each year.
