GRIDIRON GLANCE: WEEK 5
SPENCER TIGERS (3-2, 2-1 District) at CARROLL TIGERS (1-4, 1-1) - 7:30 p.m.
After letting a first-half lead slip away last week at Le Mars, the Spencer Tigers will look to rebound Friday with another district game on the road. Spencer had won three games in a row, including two in district play, before Le Mars bested them, 28-24. Tonight they will travel to face the Carroll Tigers (1-4).
Carroll will be looking for its first winning streak of the season as its coming off a 24-14 win over Storm Lake on the road last week. It was the first win of the season for Carroll, who lost to Kuemper Catholic in week one (27-21), Atlantic in week two (25-20), Denison-Schelswig (29-28) and Harlan (21-14).
In the four losses, Carroll lost by an average of five points per game. Kuemper Catholic is ranked fourth in 2A and Harlan sixth in 3A, and Carroll stayed within a score of both teams.
Tonight's game will once again have an impact on 3A District 2 standings, as Spencer is tied with Le Mars at 2-1 and Carroll and Denison-Schelswig are both 1-1. All teams are looking up at Bishop Heelan (ranked second), who are undefeated.
Carroll quarterback Jarret White completed 10-of-17 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown in last week's win over Storm Lake. The black-and-orange Tigers also rushed Nate Johnston 21 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Spencer's defense allowed Le Mars quarterback Levi Tebrink to complete 16-of-25 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns last week. The Tigers were able to intercept two passes but will be challenged again as Carroll's White has completed 52.2 percent of his 99 pass attempts this season and has thrown for 784 yards. Johnston has rushed 92 times for 441 yards and seven touchdowns. The top Carroll receiver is Luke Vonnahme, a senior, who's made 18 catches for 307 yards and three scores.
Spencer's Matt Finnern has rushed for over 100 yards in all five games this season, and the Tigers' option has resulted in numerous long runs by the pitch recipient. Blake Altenhofen ran for his second TD run of over 60 yards last week. Finnern leads the district with 672 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.
The battle of the Tigers begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Carroll High School field.
