Phillip Alden Rustan, of Simi Valley, Calif., passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 16, 2012, in Simi Valley Hospital after complications with surgery.

Born in Ruthven, Oct. 20, 1939, to Joe and Sally Rustan, Phil attended Ruthven Consolidated School, graduating in 1957. He was an excellent athlete. He received his Bachelor's degree from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake. Phil was also a proud Marine. He moved to California, where he met his wife Becky. They have been married 47 years, and have lived in Simi Valley for over 30 years.

Phil went on to have a successful career in public relations and human resources. He enjoyed meeting and working with so many different people. He retired in 2002. After that time, he took pleasure in being a starter at the Moorpark Country Club, where he could be outside and he enjoyed the surroundings.

Phil was an avid sports fan and took special interest in the horse races. He would look forward to spending time in Iowa with family and friends each year during pheasant season. Phil had been a coach for his daughters' softball teams and felt proud to take part in the many lives touched. He was a gentle man who enjoyed people, valued a good joke, and loved life.

Phil is survived by his wife, Becky; daughter, Nicole and husband, Robert Lawless; grandchildren: Jacob and Seagrin Lawless; daughter, Erika and husband, Mark Goddard; his sister Ginger and husband, Bill Grange; niece, Sheila Grange and daughter, Tess Junkans; close cousins: Larry and Rose Mary Rustan, and Ron and Sandi Chapman; aunt Mary Chapman; aunt Eileen Whitman; uncle John Goeders; George and Meredith Roland; along with relatives and friends in the area.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday Sept. 28, 2012, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Simi Valley, Calif.

Burial will be take place at a later date in Ruthven.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, Lost Island Nature Center or the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ruthven.
