A call regarding a power outage in north Spencer led a responding Spencer Municipal Utilities unit to report a field fire just before noon on Friday.

Spencer Fire Department personnel hurried to the fire in a corn field, just east of the Birchwood Estates trailer park at 2106 First Ave. E. in Spencer.

"It started when something got in the (overhead) power lines out there," Spencer Fire Chief Doug Duncan said. "Something created a spark. The SMU employees were out there to deal with an outage and called the report in."

Duncan called for assistance from Fostoria Fire and Rescue, which brought in a grass rig. The farmer of the land used his tractor and disc to help on scene as well.

Duncan, who estimated that the department fought the fire for an hour-and-a-half, projected the loss of standing corn at six acres.
