Batschelet earns Iron Cross of the German Armed Forces
A native of Spencer, Allen W. Batschelet, was recently awarded the Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr in Gold (Iron Cross of the German Armed Forces - Gold Cross of Honour), for exemplary and meritorious achievements.
Colonel Manfred Antes of the German Army made the presentation representing the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Republic of Germany) Minister of Defense.
In part, the citation reads: "Major General Allen W. Batschelet supported the interests of the German Armed Forces and the Army Forces Command in an exemplary fashion. In addition, he made essential contributions to the promotion of the German-American relations in general and specifically to the relationship between the United States Army and the German Army."
In December of last year, Batschelet was promoted to Major General (two star) in a ceremony presided over by Lieutenant General John D. Gardner, Deputy Commander for US. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany. Batschelet is currently serving in United States European Command (EUCOM) as the J3, Director of Plans and Operations. In this position, he is responsible for the conduct of planning and operations for all US military operations in the European theater, to include Israel.
Batschelet started his military career 30 years ago, enlisting in the Iowa National Guard in Spencer, assigned to the 1-194th Field Artillery. His first active duty assignment was with the 1st Armored Division in Nurnberg, Germany. During his career, he has held key command and staff roles on significant missions, including deployments to numerous combat zones and operations such as Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Bosnia-Herzegovina and multiple tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His most recent assignment before reporting to EUCOM was as the Acting V Corps Commander and deputy chief of staff, G3 Operations, for U.S. Army Europe, located in Heidelberg, Germany.
A 1979 graduate of Clay Central High School in Royal, Batschelet graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in history from Iowa State University in 1983; Batschelet completed subsequent studies at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., and at the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. He holds three Masters Degrees and has earned numerous awards and citations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star (3 awards), Legion of Merit (3 awards) and the Combat Action Badge. Allen is the son of Ruth Batschelet, a longtime Spencer resident, and the late Robert Batschelet. His wife, Terri, also an Iowa State University alum, is the daughter of Cliff and Sandra Hepworth of Royal.
Allen and Terri have their home in Stuttgart, Germany. Their daughter, Kelsey, is a senior at Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas. Their son, Adam, also an Iowa State alum, is a resident of Algona, and a District Sales Manager for Wyffels Hybrid Seed.
