Mayor Reynold Peterson, joined by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3159 and Ladies Auxiliary, signed a proclamation declaring Friday to be Buddy Poppy Day in Spencer. The local VFW and Auxiliary members will be distributing Buddy poppies at various Spencer locations from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Sites will include the post office, Fareway, Hy-Vee, Main Street Cafe, Spencer City Hall and Wal-Mart. Proceeds from the sale will be used to benefit disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans right here in the community. In 1923, the VFW was the first veterans organization to promote a nationally-organized campaign for the annual distribution of poppies assembled by disabled or hospitalized veterans. More than 16 million poppies are assembled today. The VFW and Auxiliary members raise more than $15 million annually from the distribution.
