Mr. Hessman passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Scott Hessman was born to David and Arlene (Jackson) Hessman on Sept. 6, 1959, at the Muscatine Community Hospital in Muscatine, Iowa. At age one, he moved to Ida County, Ida Grove, Iowa, where he spent all of his growing-up years. He was the usual country type boy while growing up, and at age nine became a member of 4-H, and this was his beginning in showing cattle and learning how to prepare them for the show. This was his life and he so enjoyed it. He was able to have his cattle at the Bremer farm, due to the fact that he was a city boy and this also provided him with learning from the Bremers. He showed a Shorthorn steer that won 12 out of 13 shows. The steer went on to be the Iowa State Fair Purebred shorthorn and also the Aksarban Champion. The steer was sold to Arby's Roast Beef of Omaha, Neb. Sheep and hogs were also some of his projects, and he showed and had the Champion Carcass lamb at Aksarban one year. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in May of 1977. After graduation, he spent two years at Eastern Iowa Community College in Muscatine, Iowa. He started his Professional Cattle Grooming business with Gene Doran in 1979, and following that he worked for Duane and Don Hilbert at Algona, and then on to Hartman Cattle Co. at Wood River, Neb. He was with Fred and Mike Hartman for a few years. He learned the business well during those years with Kenny Bremer, Doran, the Hilbert's and the Hartman's.

Following that learning experience, he worked for the following cattle companies: The Jim Morland Family of Eastland, Texas; Jim Harrell of Oklahoma; The Travis Otterstad Family of Tuttle, Okla.; Steve Bonham of Kansas; The O'Dell Family of southeast Oklahoma; and the Lautner Family of Jefferson, Iowa, as well as many others and currently was with the Boyle Families.

With him at the time of death were his father, David Hessman, and special friends Joan Ludvigson and Allen Swanson.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Arlene Hessman; paternal grandparents: David and Elma Hessman; and maternel grandparents: Ralph and Letha Jackson.

Surviving him are his father, Dave Hessman, of Spencer and his father's special friend, Joan Ludvigson of Holstein, Iowa; his brother, Jay; nieces: Jade, Shanti and Sara Addengast; also, aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
