Spencer hosted its annual volleyball tournament Saturday and saw regional competition from Algona, Carroll, Maple Valley-Anthon Oto and Humboldt. The Tigers went 1-4 on the day, defeating Cherokee, 2-1, for the second time this season. MV-AO went 5-0 and lost just one game all day.

In the win over conference foe Cherokee, the Tigers lost the first game, 19-21, but bounced back to win the match handily, 21-15 and 15-7. Taylor Glover led the Tigers with seven kills and three aces in the match. Spencer totaled 19 kills and 11 aces.

Spencer would get one game off Humboldt and Carroll before falling 2-1. Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto and Algona blanked Spencer, but the Tigers forced extra points against each team. Algona (8-8) was the only team to win a set against MV-AO (9-4), who has only lost to ranked teams.

For the 5-match, 13-set tournament, Spencer was led by Taylor Anderson's 34 kills. Glover and Kirstin Martindale each had 24 kills. Anderson had the highest hitting percentage (.277) as the Tigers tallied 97 kills with 64 attack errors (.109).

Kari Miller led with 48 assists for the tournament, and Sydney Van Wettering added a team-high 25 digs, with five other Tigers digging 10 or more attacks. Spencer served 85 percent on the day with 36 aces. Glover had eight with Anderson and Van Wettering with seven.

Lakes Conference play opens tonight for Spencer (8-6) at Le Mars (7-3) at 7 p.m.
