Firefighters respond to false alarm

Friday, September 7, 2012

A small portion of Second Avenue East was closed for approximately a half-hour Wednesday afternoon as Spencer firefighters investigated a fire alarm in the building at 520 Second Ave. E. Staff from the Iowa Lakes Corridor, who occupy a portion of the building, reported the alarm and were evacuated while firefighters searched for the source of the alarm. Spencer Fire Chief Doug Duncan said no fire was located and he's unsure what triggered the alarm. An alarm tech was called in to examine the issue, but Duncan had not received a report prior to press time. The building, which formerly housed R.R. Donnelley, is now owned by Spencer Municipal Utilities and will serve as SMU's new base of operation when renovations and construction efforts are complete.
