C-W-L hands CC-E 40-8 loss

Saturday, September 1, 2012

Too many Maverick turnovers and mistakes resulted in C-W-L (Corwith) coming into Royal and getting its first win in over a year, defeating Clay Central-Everly, 40-8, on Friday night. The Mavericks had a hard time stopping running back Preston Jensen also, who finished with three rushing touchdowns.

CC-E scored right before halftime, a Chazz Brown touchdown run, which put the Mavs in position heading into the second half, trailing 12-8. Following the break, CC-E pounced on an onside kick to grab some momentum back, but the wind came out of the sails when C-W-L recovered a Maverick fumble on the very next play. From there, the rout was on as CC-E is still looking for its first win as an 8-man program.

"We killed ourselves with penalties and fumbling the ball," CC-E coach Austin Davis said. "We got the momentum with the onside kick, then fumbled right away and they threw a long pass on their first play."

Brown finished the game with 108 yards on 27 carries. The senior quarterback had a couple of runs called back due to holding and fumbled after a long run inside the redzone. CC-E lost four fumbles in the game.

Jesup Muhlbauer gained 35 yards on 17 carries and Colton Doran rushed 11 times for 33 yards.

"We need to work on the offensive line," Davis said. "Their defense was getting a lot of penetration."

CC-E (0-2) will play at Whiting next Friday at 7 p.m.
