The Spencer boys cross country team finished second at the Spirit Lake Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 28, with junior Ryan Bauermeister taking second place overall (16:13). Spirit Lake's Will Norris, last year's 2A runner-up, won the race and set a new record at Brooks National Golf Course with a time of 15:28 on a day where temperatures hovered around 90 degrees into the afternoon.

Spencer's Matt Behrens finished eighth, for his second top-10 finish to start the 2012 season. Levi Gilmore and Tanner Viedenkamp both earned top-20 spots, with Gilmore coming in 14th (17:54) and Viedenkamp in 19th (18:08)

"It was a very warm night to run but all the athletes from all the schools seemed to adjust well," Spencer boys coach Jared Davis said. "We stressed that we needed to move our pack up a bit and they did improve from our first meet. Ryan Bauermeister is off to a great start to the season and Matt Behrens also looked very strong for a second week in a row."

Andrew Noah rounded out the varsity scoring in 37th place, as the Tigers finished second with 80 team points, behind Spirit Lake (54), who finished with four top-10 runners. Storm Lake (84) and Western Christian (87) followed close behind in third and fourth.

Last year's girls 2A champions, Unity Christian, and traditional 3A force MOC-Floyd Valley, provided tough competition and depth as the Lady Tigers finished third at the season's second Invitational. MOC-Floyd Valley won the girls meet (60), followed by Unity (66) and Spencer (76).

Spencer junior Cierra Guerrero led most of the race but due to confusion of the finish line's location, Unity's Krissy DeJong (15:42) was able to pass her for the win. Erika Douma of Western and Spirit Lake's Mariah Wills would also finish ahead of Guerrero, who placed fourth with a time of 15:50.

Senior Daly Tighe provided another top-10 finish for the Tigers with an eighth place in 16:09. Kari Kramer (20th), Kendra Bauermeister (21st) and Sara Bauermeister (23rd) rounding out Spencer's varsity scoring.

"We're a better team than what we showed (Tuesday), but on the other side, we were very competitive," girls coach Kurt Bauermeister said. "I felt I didn't get them mentally prepared enough to run in the heat but we'll run better next week."

Unity, Spencer, Spirit Lake, Western and MOC-Floyd Valley each had two runners in the top-10. Last year's eighth-place finisher in 3A, junior Bethany Dykstra from MOC-FV, didn't compete on Tuesday.

The Tigers head to Estherville Country Club for its next meet on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
