Larry Untiet, Spencer High School's Theatre director, was notified this week that Spencer High School Drama Department's set of last fall's musical, "Guys and Dolls" was the recipient of a first place award in the National Set Building Contest sponsored by Sceno-Graphics Set Design Company of New Wilmington, Penn.

Along with the first place recognition in this prestigious national contest, Spencer High School received a large trophy. A picture of the Guys and Dolls set from Spencer's production will also appear in the 2012-13 Sceno Graphics catalogue, which is distributed nationwide.

Spencer's sets for Guys and Dolls were built and painted entirely by Spencer High School students under the supervision of Larry Untiet and art instructor, Frank Boever.

The Spencer High School "Guys and Dolls" set earned top honors from the Sceno-Graphics Set Design Company in New Wilmington, Penn.
"Receiving this award helps to recognize the diversity of the drama department at the high school," Untiet said. "Most of the time it is the performers on stage who get all of the applause, and this way the students who are not in the limelight are able to get deserved recognition."

Each year, from 125-150 students are involved in the drama department either onstage or behind the scenes.

This award marks the ninth time the Spencer High School has placed in this national contest. Past winners include the following: 1992, third place for "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940s;" 1995, first place for "Fiddler on the Roof;" 1996, second place for "You Can't Take It With You;" 1997, second place for "Camelot;" 2004, first place for "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat;" 2006, second place for "Oklahoma!;" 2007, fourth place for "I Remember Mamma;" and 2008, fourth place for "The Sound of Music".

Other 2012 winners in this nationwide contest were from Amarillo, Texas; Ewing, N.J.; Moorhead, Minn.; Wantagh, N.Y.; Granite Bay, Calif.; Pallisade, Colo.; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chesapeake City, Md.; Warsaw, Ohio; Madison, Wis.; Avon Grove, Penn.; Sandy, Utah; Jacksonville, N.C. and San Jacinto, Calif.
