"Only one life will soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last." These words have a way of getting my attention. The older I become the faster life seems to be zooming by. Someone has well said: We shall not pass this way again, any good that we can do, let us do it now, let us not detour nor neglect it because we will not pass this way again. It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. Hebrews 9:28.
While we are living, the Lord wants us to trust in Him with all our hearts: not to lean on our own understanding. In all our ways we are to acknowledge Him, and He has promised to direct our paths." Proverbs 3:5,6. The Lord, in addition to being our Savior and friend, is a travel agent and will not only direct our paths, He will lead us in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake." Psalms 23:3. The part that makes it worth surrendering our lives to Him and being obedient to Him and His Word, is that He promises to lead us in the way everlasting." That is, if we are praying prayers like David prayed: "Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit with in me." Psalms 51:10 And "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalms 139:23,24. It is a wonderful thing when we realize that we are not our own; that we have been bought with a price; and that we are to glorify God in our bodies and our spirits; which are God's. 1Corinthians 6:19,20.
It is good to be reminded frequently of Psalm 24:1 "The earth is the Lord's, the fulness thereof, the world and all they that dwell therein." Divine ownership should not be optional in our thinking. The day is coming when every knee shall bow at the Name of Jesus and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, Philippians 2:10,11. Jesus came to be our Savior and our Lord according to Luke 2:11 "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord." And the Lord blesses Nations and people whose God is the Lord, Psalms 33:12; 144:15.
God is the giver of life. "Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves we are His people the sheep of His pasture." Psalm 100:3. He has placed us here on earth for a reason and it is only reasonable that we present ourselves back to Him for His purpose and for His service. Romans 12:1,2
Only one life will soon be past, is in harmony with other Scriptures such as James 4:14 "for what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." And Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble." Who is exempt of trouble? David said: "This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles." And "many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all." Psalm 34:6,19 Jesus said: "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33. Paul said: "Yea all that live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution...but out of them all the Lord delivered me." 2Timothy 3:11,12.
So, even though our short lives are full of trouble, if we know the Lord, if we have surrendered our lives to Him and if we are labourers together with Him, He has promised to help us and see us through. My Mother would often say in the midst of her physical trouble and afflictions: "What do people do who do not know the Lord?" She claimed Psalm 46:1 as her life verse: " God is my refuge and strength a very present help in trouble." Only one life will soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last. Let us remember the promise and the hope we have in Him "If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him..." 2Timothy 2:12.
