CC-E board approves pick-up purchase

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

The Clay Central-Everly school board discussed the purchase of a used pick-up truck in Monday night's meeting.

The original request was for a small tractor to help clear snow in the winter-time. But when members of the board looked at the item requested and the job that it would do, they recommended that the board approve the purchase of a pick-up instead.

"CC-E doesn't currently have a pick-up," board member Tony Sievert said. "It's a better use of the money and it will save a lot of time."

The members of the board who investigated the original request will look at a potential truck to purchase and report back to the board. They will also research a push-blade for snow removal. They expect to spend around $15,000 for both items.

The board also discussed the potential repairs on the wind turbine at the elementary school. The cost for the new parts is $26,389. Dennis McClain, superintendent of CC-E, estimates that with the increased energy that the new parts will generate, the savings could pay back the cost in about two and a half years.

One concern of the board is how far the district is willing to go in repairing the turbine before the cost spent exceeds the return.

"These parts have a two-year warranty," McClain said. "By the time the warranty is expired, the cost is almost paid back."

Another concern is the amount of noise that the turbine will generate.

"We want to be good neighbors," board president Scott Rinehart said.

The board tabled a decision on the turbine until they can find data from the manufacturer to answer their questions.

The JV football program has been canceled for the year, due to low numbers. The athletic program plans to move forward with the Varsity football program, and those who had been practicing with the JV program are looking at other options.

In other business, the board:

- Appointed Steve Avery as the district's attorney.

- Appointed Diane White as the board secretary and treasurer.

- Approved the The Hartley Sentinel-The Everly-Royal News as the newspaper of record for the CC-E school district.

Wind turbine noise? I went to junior high at the Royal CC/E building for three years and I never once recall hearing any noise come from that wind turbine.
