Women's Preview

This year's team includes six returning players and 17 incoming freshmen and will look to improve on a winning 2011 campaign. Head coach Ammon Bennett expects big things.

"We are eager for the season to start as this group of players should be very competitive for us," Bennett said. "The returning athletes were all starters last year and helped us to a 10-7-2 overall record."

The team finished the season in the regional semifinal game, falling to Iowa Central, 1-0, in double overtime.

The top returning offensive players for the Lakers this upcoming season include Cortnee Sanchez (12 goals, five assists); Brittney Valentine (seven goals, six assists) and Salena Ramos (four goals, nine assists). Top defenders returning are Jill Brockbank and Danni Houston, with Natasha Litchfield in goal.

"These returning players will have a huge impact for us and will definitely be challenged by the new group of incoming players," Bennett said. "It should make for some good competitive practices as each player will be challenging for the starting positions."

The 2012 women's schedule features several top teams from around the region and nation. Iowa Western and Iowa Central are at the top of the league, year-in and year-out. The Lakers also play Johnson County Community College, a team that played for a national title two years ago, and Laramie County Community College, which is a perennial top-10 program.

"The schedule is very competitive with our athletes playing six teams that usually are ranked in the top-15 in the NJCAA polls," Bennett said. "It should be a big step up for us in competition but if you want to be the best you have to play the best. We hope the community will come out and support our team as we look to have a great year."

Men's Preview

The 2012 men's team at Iowa Lakes will include five returning players and 20 new athletes. Head coach Ammon is pleased with the players coming in this fall and is pleased with results from practices, which began Aug. 9.

"The returning players -- along with the new group -- will bring a great deal of technical ability and a big background in club soccer," Bennett said. "This, along with a decent international group of players, should put us in contention for a run at the region title."

The Lakers return starting keeper Tanner Collins, all-region performer Jaycon Yeates, midfielders Jared Rowell and Aristides Meija and Dilan Mathys, who missed last season with a knee injury.

"Our returners will be key to our success but will have to work hard to keep the starting positions as our incoming group is very talented," Bennett said. "The schedule is highly-competitive and should challenge us and hopefully prepare us for the post season."
