Men of courage, integrity sought

Courageous men.

Men with integrity.

These are the things Pastor Al Dean is hoping to create in Spencer. And he's looking for those interested in working toward those standards.

Dean, who leads the congregation at Living Word Outreach Ministries, has established a Christian men's group, involving men from multiple area churches, studying from a guide based on the film "Courageous."

"Courageous" told the story of four police officers and another man who all faced life-changing challenges in their lives and determined to work together to be the kind of men God wants them to be. They sign a resolution and vow to hold each other accountable.

Dean was moved by the message of the Christian film and desired to begin a group locally, hoping to involve men from around the Spencer area. Initially, a group of about 20 came together, meeting as a large group once a month, then getting together in smaller study groups once a month as well.

At the present time, the majority of the group is comprised of men from Living Word, although Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Dayspring Assembly of God churches have participants as well.

Dean wants to see that demographic change.

"I'd like to see other churches participate," the pastor said. "What I'm wanting to see is men fill God's role as a husband, father, their role in their church, being men of integrity in the workplace. These are all critical things."

He is hopeful that by building an ever-growing local group to mentor and hold each other accountable, the community will reap the benefit of a connected group of Christian men stepping up to be what God has called them to be.

"Living the definition of what God calls us to be," Dean stressed. "Accountability is something that is sadly lacking. ... There are some men who haven't had positive role models in their life - but it's not too late."

Both the large and small group meetings only last an hour and are filled with study, open discussion, prayer and development of faith. Dean hopes to create a Christian brotherhood spanning the bridges between individual churches.

  • My kids are grown and have kids of their own. Is this group primarily for young fathers?

  • This is a group for men of any age to participate in. All are welcome, young and young at heart according to Pastor Al Dean. All have something to contribute.
