Scott Benson is up to 14 birdies on the tournament. And counting.

The former Iowa Lakes golfer and Jackson, Minn. native shot his second 65 of the Northwest Amateur to take a three-shot lead after two rounds of qualifying play at Spencer Golf and Country Club on Friday, August 2. Benson hasn't bogeyed a hole yet on his way to 14-under-par after 36 holes.

University of Minnesota golfer Erik Van Rooyen trails Benson after carding a second-round 68, which drops him to 11-under-par for the tournament. Van Rooyen won the Minnesota State Amateur at Hastings Country Club three weeks ago by shooting even par.

Algona's Josh Manske, the 2009 Northwest Amateur champion, tees off on No. 8 hole at the 2012 Northwest Am on Friday, Aug. 3. Manske shot an opening-round 5-under-par 67. Gopher teammates David Haley Jr. and Robert Bell, both playing with Van Rooyen, are also in the hunt after two rounds. Bell, who shot 65 yesterday, finished Friday's round at 1-under after six birdies and five bogeys. Haley Jr. finished 6-under on Friday, including an eagle on No. 1, to move up to a tie for third (-10).

Brett Benson, Scott's brother, made the same charge Haley Jr. did and also shot 66 to go to 10-under. Brett birdied five of his last seven holes on Friday.

A group of golfers teed up for their first round Friday morning, including Josh Manske. Golfing with his dad, Bill, Manske carded a 5-under 67 to secure an early position on the leaderboard in the 72-hole tournament. Bill is second in the senior division at 1-under.

Former Spirit Lake golfer Matt Weeks also shot an opening round 67 on Friday, which is tied for ninth with Manske and last year's champion, Kirby Pettitt, who shot a second-round score of 71 Friday.

Michael Wuertz of Davenport jumped 20 spots on the board after a 6-under 66 in round two. Chris Kramer and Ryan Kinseth also maintained a top-10 position after Friday's second-round play.

Saturday will finish second-round qualifying play, which will determine the cuts for Sunday. The championship flight will be the top 32 scores plus ties, and will play two rounds of 18 holes to determine a championship.

The championship flight cut is usually around even par. Currently, the cut is 1-under-par. There will also be six flights of 16 playing 36 holes on Sunday.
