Ruth Evelyn Merchant Sonius, 94, was born April 20, 1918, in Sanborn, Ia., to William and Fannie Merchant, the youngest of seven children. Raised in Sanborn-Spencer area, she eloped with her childhood sweetheart, Wesley Sonius on Jan. 1, 1937. They lived in Indiana, Oregon and Iowa, moving to Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1954 where they started a construction business that spanned nearly thirty years, building homes and small office buildings.

Ruth and Wes discovered golf in the 1960's and it became a lifelong passion. They wintered in Arizona and enjoyed family, friends and golf in retirement until Wes' death in 1987. Ruth remained in Twin Falls for the remainder of her life.

She is survived by three sons: Allan (Drena) of Pocatello, Idaho, Dennis of Twin Falls, Idaho, and David (Laura) of St. Louis, Mo. She is also survived by six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband; she was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Heidi and Doug; daughter-in-law, Nancy; and her six siblings.

Cremation and a private graveside service for the family will be held at Twin Falls Cemetery according to her wishes.
