Vision Expo offers resources for sight loss

Thursday, August 2, 2012

The Iowa Department for the Blind brought its summer Vision Expo to Spencer Wednesday, putting together more than four hours of seminars, vendor presentations and interactive opportunities for those facing vision challenges. (Above) Bob Farmer, owner of The Shooting Shop in Kingsley, shared with the audience how his vision loss cost him his job. The IDB assisted him - from initial idea to business plan and start-up - to live his dream by opening his gunsmith business. In 2011, Farmer's business generated $70,000 in sales, and this year, he's already surpassed $150,000. Farmer told the group, "I couldn't have done it without the people putting on this program." Additional speakers included Dr. Stephen P. Fox M.D. with the Wolfe Eye Clinic, of Spencer, talking about treatments available for a series of eye conditions; and Curtis Chong, an assistive technology expert with the IDB. (Below) Multiple agencies provided a variety of informational opportunities and resources for those experiencing vision loss, offering everything from vision testing to reading services.
