Pioneer Days fun for all ages

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Mary Dannatt and her Pioneer Days Committee have planned fun-filled events for all ages to enjoy at the 2012 Pioneer Days celebration. The annual event takes place in Milford Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29.

According to Dannatt, things kick off at 8 a.m. on Friday with the All-Town Garage Sales plus bake sales at St. Joseph Catholic and Union Memorial churches. People throughout the community hold their garage sales on Friday and some continue into Saturday, allowing everyone to roam around town, hopping from sale to sale. A sale of books begins in the Milford Community Center at 9 a.m.

Bridge and cribbage tournaments, the Kiddie Parade and Kids Carnival are favorites on Friday. Line up for the Kiddie Parade takes place at the Milford Nursing Center at 6 p.m. The youngsters will march down H Avenue to Florence Park at 6:30 where the carnival, root beer floats, free franks, kids' water fights and Little Tractor Pullers contest will follow.

"We have a new event this year," Dannatt noted. "The first annual Classic Car Lake Cruise will take place on Friday evening."

In the past the Classic Car Cruise-In was held on Saturday afternoon.

"We will have the cruise-in Saturday afternoon like usual," said Dannatt. "But on Friday night the cars will line up at Florence Park and cruise around the lake."

The lineup is at 5:30 with the cars leaving for the ride at 6:30 p.m.

Entrants in the annual Pioneer Days parade will begin lining up Saturday at 9 a.m. in Memorial Park. Parade time is 11 a.m. followed by a barbecue in Florence Park and free watermelon feed.

Other activities on Saturday include the 5K/10K/1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, Bingo, water fights, wing eating contest and the Beat the Heat Summer Extravaganza. An antique tractor pull competition will begin after the parade at Memorial Park.

A new event this year is the McBRAT Poker Ride. Dannatt explains, "McBRAT means Milford Casual Bike Ride Around Town and is for bicycles only. They will get on their bicycles at 4 p.m. Saturday and ride around town getting cards at various Milford businesses."

The ride concludes at Boulders Inn & Suites with a barbecue. The best poker hands from the cards gathered on the ride win prizes.

Saturday concludes with a street dance, beer and brats in Florence Park with the band Starfire playing from 8 p.m. until midnight.

Sunday dawns early with the registration for TRAWL taking place in Florence Park at 7 a.m.

"That stands for Tractor Ride Around West Lake," Dannatt said. "It is sponsored by the Okoboji FFA and is a popular event."

The Campus Women's Club Omelet Breakfast, Pioneer Days Four-Person Scramble golf tournament at Woodlyn Hills, both at 8 a.m. and Creative Spirits from 2-4 p.m. close out the weekend long celebration.

"We want everyone to come to Milford to see the great businesses we have, and enjoy the events we have planned with their whole family," Dannatt concluded.
