Three of the four classes feature last year's state champions at this year's tournament, which began Friday night at Principal Park in Des Moines and will continue through Saturday, July 28.

Class 1A's Martensdale-St. Marys (38-5) is looking for its third consecutive title. The Blue Devils advanced with an 8-2 win over Treynor Monday afternoon and will face the bracket's top seed, Bishop Garrigan (37-8) on Thursday evening in the semifinals. Garrigan beat North Tama, 3-1, on Monday.

Class 2A's defending champs, Davis County (42-1), got a scare from Alta-Aurelia Saturday night but squeaked out a 1-0 win in a 71-minute contest that featured just two hits by each team and an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Dyersville Beckman appears to be on a collision course with Davis County for the title.

Dowling Catholic (32-10) is looking to win another 4A title but will have to do it from the No. 6-seed in its bracket. The Maroons must get by Fort Dodge (34-7) in Wednesday night's opener. Ankeny is the No. 1 seed in 4A with a 40-2 record and will look to match its softball team, who won a 5A state title on Friday night.

Last year's 3A champ, Solon, had won two titles in a row, including a 2A title in 2010 but lost to Marion, 9-5, in the district final. Dallas Center-Grimes is the top-seed coming in and could face No. 2-seed Bishop Heelan in the state final. Class 3A will begin today (Tuesday).

State tournament play continues all week from Des Moines.
