Baseball: Spencer walks past Alta-Aurelia, 10-4

Friday, July 6, 2012

Spencer's Tayler Tatman beats the tag of Alta-Aurelia's Alex Stephan at home plate on Thursday, July 5 to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning at Andy McGaffin Field. Spencer would use a combination of walks and hits to beat the Warriors, 10-4.

Spencer didn't need many base hits Thursday night because they took advantage of nine free passes issued by Alta-Aurelia pitchers en route to a 10-4 win at Andy McGaffin Field. Six of the nine walks came around to score for the Tigers, who improved to 13-11 on the year.

The Tigers collected six hits, including two each by Austin Allen and Blake Seier. Seier drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the third to give Spencer a 4-1 lead.

Alta-Aurelia (19-10) scored one in the first but went silent until Spencer took the lead in the third. Four walks preceded Seier's single, including three in a row, which plated a run.

The Tigers scored three more in the fourth inning on an error, two more walks, a wild pitch, an RBI-groundout by Weston Glienke and an RBI-single by Allen.

Tayler Tatman earned the win with a complete game. He gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out five and walking one. He walked three times and scored two runs at the plate.

Tatman and Seier, both seniors, were honored before the game as part of Senior Night.

Spencer added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth after a walk and back-to-back singles by Allen and Seier. They both came in to score on a throwing error.

"We showed some patience at the plate tonight. We're finding ways to get on base and move around even when we're not getting a lot of hits," Spencer coach Brian Dirkx said. "The key for us is to cut down our strikeouts, put the ball in play and put some pressure on their defense."

Zevin Carlson and Blake Rosendahl both went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored to provide some offense from the bottom of the Tiger lineup.

Spencer will travel to Bishop Garrigan in Algona tonight (Friday) before wrapping up the regular season with three games next week. First round playoff action will begin on Friday, July 13, for the Tigers when they face Spirit Lake in Le Mars at 5 p.m.
