2A Softball: Okoboji advances with 12-3 win over Rebels

A close game earlier on gave way to an Okoboji rout of Sioux Central in the opening round of 2A Regional play Tuesday night in Milford. The Pioneers trailed early but would pour on the runs late as they advanced with a 12-3 win over the Rebels.

Sioux Central took an early 2-0 lead after Brandy Richards scored in the second and Chandler Johannsen scored in the third. Okoboji would tie the game in the bottom of the third when Clare Eckard scored on a wild pitch and Abby Taylor drove in Olivia Rolhk with a double.

Taylor went 3-for-4 in the game with four RBIs and a run scored. Rolhk walked all four times she batted and came around to score three runs. Eckard, from the No. 9 spot in the lineup, was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Okoboji's Mikkinzie Peschong earned the win over Sioux Central in the opening round of 2A Regional play Tuesday night in Milford. Peschong gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out three.
Walks were a big factor for Sioux Central starter Gloria Jensen, who issued eight in her 5-plus innings. Five of the eight would come around to score. Jensen was relieved by Lanae Shiley during a seven-run sixth inning.

Jensen gave up eight runs (six earned) on five hits and two strikeouts, but the walks would prove to be costly.

Mikkinzie Peschong earned the win in seven innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three.

Hallie Ehlers went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Rebels, and Natalie Jensen was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Johannsen picked up a hit and scored a run, as did Richards. Gloria Jensen singled and scored in the sixth.

Okoboji (17-15) will advance to face No. 1-ranked North Union in Swea City today (Thursday). Sioux Central finishes the season 8-19. They graduate four seniors, all starters and positioned up the middle on defense. Catcher Brandy Richards, second baseman Presley Herrig, shortstop Chandler Johannsen and center fielder Natalie Jensen all played their final game for the Rebels. Three of the four collected hits in their last game.
