Baseball: Bulldogs stifle Tigers, 6-1

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Spencer couldn't get much going offensively as they picked up just three hits in a 6-1 Lakes Conference loss to Le Mars Wednesday night at Le Mars High School field. The Tigers struck out 10 times against starter Colan Borchers as they fell to 9-10 overall this season.

"We struck out looking too many times tonight," Spencer coach Brian Dirkx said.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning off Spencer starter Matthew Klemme, and three times in the fourth. Klemme took the loss after 5 2/3 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits and five walks. He struck out nine.

"When (Matthew) was ahead in the count, he was on," Dirkx said. "He threw pretty well and had good command of his curve ball but his pitch count got up there with the walks."

Le Mars was able to move its runners around the bases despite collecting just six singles. The Tigers committed one error in the game.

"They do a really good job of manufacturing runs," Dirkx said.

Weston Glienke went 1-for-3 with a double, and Tayler Tatman and Brady Illg went 1-for-2 to total Spencer's three hits.

Spencer's lone run came in the top of the seventh when Austin Allen, who reached on an error, came around to score on a Le Mars outfield miscue.

The Tigers will travel to Emmetsburg tonight (Thursday) for a rescheduled game and host Western Christian at Andy McGaffin Field on Friday night.
