OWI charge follows accident

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

A Spencer resident was charged with operating while intoxicated and failure to maintain control after the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu he was operating in the 2700-mile of Highway 18 left the roadway and rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof.

Randy Jo Wiersma, 32, totalled his vehicle, while traveling westbound on Highway 71. The Clay County Sheriff's report indicated Wiersma lost control, entered the south ditch and rolled. It is alleged Wiersma attempted to flee the scene but was detained by first responders until law enforcement officers arrived on the scene.

The OWI charge was Wiersma's second and he was placed in jail.
