Spirit Lake handed the Spencer softball team a 12-3 loss in Spirit Lake on Tuesday night to even the season series between the Lakes Conference rivals. The Indians pounded out 11 hits and played solid defense to earn the victory after losing 13-5 in Spencer on June 4.
Spirit Lake (14-12, 4-6 Lakes) shortstop Paige Krause led the Indians' offense with a 4-for-4 night, including a home run, four runs scored and three RBIs. Emily Mercer doubled twice and drove in four runs for the Indians, who scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 10-2 lead.
Spencer collected four hits off starter Cara Vale, who earned the win with six innings pitched, two runs and four strikeouts. Krause pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.
Carly Richardson took the loss for Spencer.
"They put it play and made all the defensive plays," Spencer coach Greg Jones said. "We didn't play defense behind Carly very well."
The Tigers committed six fielding errors on the night.
Kari Kramer picked up two of the hits for the Tigers, going 2-for-4. Karis Rhode and Madi Rost each singled, and Alexa Allen and Rost each scored a run.
The Tigers scored in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead but the Indians' bats would answer immediately with three in the bottom half of the inning to take control of the game.
Spencer's game Wednesday night at Emmetsburg was postponed due to rain. No make-up date has been determined.
Spencer (10-8, 5-3 Lakes) will host its annual tournament this weekend, beginning Friday at 2 p.m. Games will be played at Tiger Field and Pederson Fields 3 and 4.
